| Conference Overview |
|
|
While our region is increasingly
recognized for its high quality of life, challenges linger.
Tighter budgets, shrinking population, increasing consumption of land,
and disparities between haves and have-nots call for new solutions ...
regional cooperation and planning and strategies to link social equity
to economic equity for all in Southwestern Pennsylvania.
|
|
|
The goal of the 2003 Smart Growth
Conference is to broaden and deepen the growing dialogue and action to
promote regional equity. Expert speakers and facilitators will
explore key equity issues that challenge our region today - from
declining urban centers linked to expanding suburbs to transportation
and housing - and place these issues in a regional context. The
conference will engage participants in interactive discussions designed
to help community builders make linkages to regional issues toward
achieving equitable development through Smart Growth.
|
|
Presentations and facilitated
workshops will focus on the links among issues stemming from racial
disparities and practical solutions to ensure that racial equity makes
its way explicitly into regional policies and strategies. The
agenda will focus on four key areas - Equitable Development; Equitable
Job Dispersal and Employment Access; Affordable Housing; and Land Use
and Health. Framed from a regional perspective, key issues to be
addressed with Smart Growth best practices in mind include housing,
transportation, health, economic development, land use and
infrastructure.
