CONFERENCE OVERVIEW

Hard economic times are demonstrating the global economy favors metropolitan regions that function well. Cities and regions around the world are responding. They are redefining their missions and economic development strategies. New models are emerging to cope with the demands of the world-wide economy including new strategic planning processes, large-scale citizen participation, and new forms of regional governance.

This conference will explore how governance and economic performance are connected and consider ways in which a fragmented metropolitan area may limit itself in the context of intense international competition. Distinguished conference keynote speakers will provide an international perspective with insights to ways in which progressive regions are reinventing their futures and organizing for competitiveness. Is Southwestern Pennsylvania positioned to create competitive advantage in this new global environment?  Or, will the impact of globalization compound struggles our region already faces with respect to jobs, social equity, and home-town economies?

The conference will feature presentations, participant engagement and panel responses on a broader mission for economic development – regional transformation. It is an invitation to Southwestern Pennsylvanians to take a practical step toward regional collaboration and development to become more sustainable and prosperous across interdependent urban, suburban, and rural communities.
