Regional Participation for Sustainable Development

Co-Hosts

Since 1945, The Pittsburgh Foundation has worked to improve the quality of life in the Pittsburgh region by evaluating and addressing community issues, promoting charitable giving, and connecting donors to the critical needs of the community. Many generous individuals have invested in their community by establishing funds at the Foundation. Funds have exceeded the 1,000 mark for the first time in the Foundation’s history, and currently total 1,033.

Through donor designated funds, donors may give to the organization of their choice. Establishing a fund through the Foundation allows individuals and organizations to support areas of charitable interest and realize the significant tax advantages.

The Pittsburgh Foundation is one of the oldest community foundations in the U.S., and is the nation’s 17th largest. In 2005, the organization celebrates “60 years of investing in our community, its people, our future.”

The Institute of Politics is an independent, community supported and non-partisan source of educational programs and services for elected officials - local, state and federal - as well as other civic, non-profit organization, business and foundation leaders.  Operating under the auspices of the University of Pittsburgh, the Institute creates and encourages opportunities for faculty, students and the broader community to join these leaders in the examination and discussion of difficult public policy questions.

The mission of SP is to affect decision-making in the Pittsburgh region so that it integrates economic prosperity, social equity, and environmental quality. We do so by building diverse coalitions, developing measurable new indicators as a compass, and undertaking key initiatives. In all of our work we emphasize long term and sustained quality of life for all citizens.

In collaboration with The Transportation for Livable Communities Project, a partnership with the Surface Transportation Policy Project Sustainable Pittsburgh advocates the integration of land use planning and transportation so as to enhance the quality, livability and character of communities.
