Conference Overview

There is growing commitment to comprehensive planning, with greater emphasis on public participation, at the county, region, and state levels. 2005 marks significant opportunities for residents of Southwestern Pennsylvania to work in partnership with the region's leaders to strengthen our communities by establishing a vision and framework for sustainable development. Accordingly, community leaders are called upon to seize the moment and engage in public planning processes at various levels in Southwestern Pennsylvania.

This conference will focus on benefits of a planning process for public infrastructure investments that integrate land use, economic development, and transportation to revitalize Southwestern Pennsylvania’s communities.

  • Conference presentations and panels will provide perspectives on proven strategies for public planning to guide investments that reinvest in our existing communities.  Come prepared to consider whether Southwestern Pennsylvania can develop a consensus on priorities for public investment. Can these priorities lead to an investment pattern that promotes sustainable development and a prosperous future for the region?

  • Participants will provide input to the update of the region’s Long Range Transportation and Development Plan utilizing the regional guidance document in a special session facilitated by the Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission.

  • Conference participants will consider a Regional Policy Guidance Document that will be shared with public agencies at the state, region and local levels for input to the region’s planning processes. Sustainable Pittsburgh and many partners throughout the region have developed the Guidance Document that will guide the region's public investments and planning toward creating sustainable communities.
