The 2006 Smart Growth Conference is distinguished from past conferences by allowing participants to vote on a prioritized set of strategies and collaborative actions to speed the development and redevelopment of core communities throughout the region.  This interactive public participation engagement process will be facilitated by use of wireless hand-held voting devices.

In advance of the Smart Growth Conference, this spring, five civic and government organizations* collaborated to host a series of forums throughout the region to collect input. The objectives of the forums and conference are to: provide input to the Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission’s Long Range Transportation and Development Plan - "Project Region"; demonstrate cross-community common needs, review a set of currently emerging state and regional policy options; identify common barriers and policy opportunities for redevelopment; provide technical assistance; and build consensus on a focused set of strategies and collaboration for regional implementation.

Based on reports by leaders from each of the five pre-conference regional forums, attendees at the Smart Growth Conference will have informed input to issues that impact the growth, development and future of the region. Conference participants will then vote to identify a set of strategies and begin discussion of collaborative actions to advance these solutions toward redevelopment of our core communities to Renew Southwestern Pennsylvania.

Keynote speaker for the Smart Growth Conference is David Soule, associate director at the Center for Urban and Regional Policy at Northeastern University in Boston where he conducts research on urban economic issues and tax policy.  He is the former head of the Boston Metropolitan Area Planning Council. Mr. Soule will discuss “Overcoming Deal Breakers to Urban Redevelopment for Regional Prosperity” focusing on challenges and rewards of revitalizing older industrial cities.

Following-up the 2006 Smart Growth Conference, the partnering organizations will to determine action steps to advance each of the priority strategies that will be determined at the conference.  Resulting action plans will include engaging the public, conference participants, representatives from the regional forums, and additional stakeholders throughout the region.

The Sixth Annual 2006 Smart Growth Conference is supported by the Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation, Richard King Mellon Foundation, The Heinz Endowments, and The Pittsburgh Foundation.
