Building Communities through Recreation,
A Guide for Organizing an Outdoor Festival

How does one strengthen and promote their community? By organizing an outdoor recreation community festival - getting all types of people together to sample outdoor recreation offerings. Promoting the recreation facilities and unique amenities located within a community or county is a great way to strengthen any community. Learn how by obtaining your copy of “Building Communities through Recreation, A Guide for Organizing an Outdoor Festival” a new publication written by Donna Bour and produced by Sustainable Pittsburgh.

The guide is designed to help communities plan a festival and is based on Sustainable Pittsburgh’s and the Western Pennsylvania Field Institute’s three years of organizing the Venture Outdoors Festival. These events incorporate outdoor recreation as an important and vital part of a community’s image. The region’s quality of life and beauty is tied to its topography. Each community lends a wealth of beauty and outdoor amenities to the region. Whether it’s the state or local parks, a calm river or the raging white water rapids, the rolling hills or mysterious cavern, a community recreation festival will educate all who attend and provide opportunities to sample outdoor recreation activities in a natural environment.

Funded by The Richard King Mellon Foundation with additional support from the Heinz Endowments, “Building Communities through Recreation, A Guide for Organizing an Outdoor Festival,” is an “A to Z” how-to manual for organizing a recreation festival.
