8.08          Cranberry goes green

More than simply a sounding board for ideas, the SCDN will walk the sustainable walk by initiating and completing concrete projects.  As an initial specific project undertaking, SCDN is facilitating a group of vacant property experts from around the region to address this systemic problem with strategies at scale for the region.  The Vacant Properties Solutions Project held its first meeting on July 29 and identified needs for: sharing case studies of best practices for recycling property, working with the state for intervention on funding a property recycling system, funding assistance funding for greening solutions, and coordinated advocacy in support of vacant property focused legislation in cooperation with the PA Housing Alliance.  Next steps are to set priorities and determine a plan of action.

SCDN will also conduct Sustainability Assessments via Sustainable Pittsburgh's Sustainable Community Solutions consultancy (a proven process of assembling a team of professionals to conduct a comprehensive assessment of how a municipality can implement sustainability policies and practices).  A goal is to engage the state in expanding existing funding programs to entice municipalities to conduct sustainability assessments and use sustainability as a framework for planning and programming.
