SAFE ACCOUNTABLE FLEXIBLE AND EFFICIENT TRANSPORTATION EQUITY ACT - A LEGACY FOR USERS (SAFETEA-LU)

SAFETEA-LU or HR 3 BILL

Late last week, the United States Congress finally approved legislation renewing the nation’s highway and public transportation laws. The bill, called the Safe Accountable Flexible and Efficient Transportation Equity Act – A Legacy for Users (SAFETEA-LU or HR 3), passed overwhelmingly, with a price tag of $286 billion over six years.

President Bush is apparently not disturbed: "We had a little problem getting that bill done over the last couple of years because we had a disagreement about the right number," he said. "I felt that the number ought to be a fiscally responsible number. We worked hard with members of the Senate and the House. I'll be proud to sign a fiscally responsible highway bill next Wednesday in the state of Illinois."

Transportation for Livable Communities will provide information from its partner organizations, including the Surface Transportation Policy Project (STPP) on the implications of the bill, including projects and programs for Southwestern Pennsylvania.  STPP will also be developing a guidebook for the new bill that we will make available at a future workshop (date to be determined).
